Special Characteristics

This impressive property is perched on a hilltop overlooking the property's olive groves, with views over the Val d'Orcia and to Mount Amiata, the highest mountain in Tuscany. The oldest part of the building dates to 1100, when it was owned by a religious order. In the 16th century it became a working farm. La Loggiata has been featured in Food and Wine magazine and the book Private Tuscany, which features the interior style of Tuscany's most charming homes. A scene from the movie Under the Tuscan Sun was filmed here.

The interiors are comfortable, relaxed and interesting, together creating the feel of the traditional Italian country house that it is. The furnishings include family antiques and an extensive collection of antique textiles. There are wood beam ceilings throughout.

The architect-owner transformed the first floor, which was originally a wine cellar, granary and stable, into a living room/dining area, kitchen and a cozy nook with a magnificent fireplace. The walls are ochre and sienna colors, complementing the terracotta tile floors. The living room has ample seating, and the dining area has a massive cedar table facing the stone fireplace. The kitchen's rustic arched walls are covered in baskets and old copper and pewter cookware. It is equipped for a professional cook. A twin bedroom and a complete bathroom are also on this floor.

The second floor is reached through a stone staircase in the courtyard. The stairs lead to a covered loggia of brick arches, a furnished area ideal for relaxing and enjoying the views. A book-lined sitting room with fireplace serves as the focal point for this floor. There is a master double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, as well as two double bedrooms each with its own bathroom. There is an additional small sitting room on this floor.

Just across the courtyard are the two apartments. Il Portico has a large living room with a fabulous view. A curtain separates the small kitchen corner, which has all the basics. There is a large double bedroom and one bathroom. Next to the apartment is a large outside covered sitting and dining area with a barbeque and pizza oven. Lo Studio was restored in 2001 and is a cozy apartment reached by a short flight of stairs. It has a large, book-lined living room with comfortable leather chairs facing the fireplace. There is a kitchen corner and a large double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom.

The beautiful grounds are maintained by the daily gardener. Flowers and herbs abound, and the scent of lemon trees, jasmine and perfumed geraniums fill the air. Centuries-old oak trees shade the property in the summer. The large swimming pool is set near olive groves with a view of Mount Amiata.

The property is located near the small fortified village of Monticchiello, in the heart of the Val d'Orcia in Southern Tuscany. It is very close to the hill towns of Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino, and a 45-minute drive from Siena. Guests can drive a short distance to Chiusi, a town on the intercity train line, and easily spend a day in Rome or Florence.

The villa is equipped with a telephone/fax, satellite TV, VCR, washing machine, dishwasher, professional kitchen, and independent heating.
